Singers change a certain genre of music by using the sound of their voice. Sinatra and Dean Martin did it in the 1940s. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones did it in the 1960s, and Prince and Michael Jackson did it in the 1980s. The fact is, great singers alter music categories because their voices have a certain element to them that reaches into the souls of music lovers and changes them. Great singers are born to make a difference, and Norka Luque is one of those great singers. Norka was born in Venezuela just like her idol Shakira. Norka’s parent knew she had the talent to make it, but making it in Venezuela was not easy. The number of Venezuelan singers that made it to the top of the music business over the last 40 years is less than a handful. The music business attracts people around the world, but the people that actually enjoy a long-term career in music is a small number compared to those that try to make it. Norka Luque is one of the people that made it, but it wasn’t easy.
Norka started singing in Caracas when she was eight. Her parents helped her develop her musical talent by providing voice and music lessons. When it came time to leave Venezuela to pursue a career, Norka moved to France. She studied business administration and earned degrees in marketing, fashion, and the culinary arts. Norka also joined a band that played in the French dance clubs on the weekends. The band, Bad Moon Rising, earned a reputation thanks to Norka’s voice. But Norka knew she had to move to the United States to make it in the music world, and that’s what she did. She moved to Miami and found work singing in a club on South Beach. Norka’s voice took the club’s owner by surprise, and before long that club was packed seven days a week. Luque loved to sing, and it showed
It took four years of club work, but Norka Luque was finally being recognized for her talent. Emilio Estefan, the famous record producer, got word that Norka had a rare talent. When Estefan heard her sing, he immediately signed her to a recording contract. Norka worked hard with composer Archie Pena, Luigi Giraldo, and Estefan and her first single was released in 2011. That was the year Norka got the recognition she deserved, and that recognition hasn’t stopped since then. Norka is now changing the face of Latino music.
