A New Lease On Life, Chris Piazzi

Many people are diagnosed with cancer every day. This disease takes it toll on the patients and their families from the moment of diagnosis. Chris Piazzi, chairman of the Board of the College of Lake County Foundation and president of Mundelein Community Bank, was diagnosed with a rare liver disease. Over time the disease took its toll on his body and during one of his tests, cancer was found on his kidney. After his team of doctors collaborated, they decided that a dual transplant of his liver and kidney would be the only way he would survive. On February 27, he received a blessing and got his transplant.

The College of Lake County Foundation decided to honor Chris Piazzi and the work he has done for the Foundation on June 12, at their golf tournament. The Foundation raises money to help students reach their potential academically with helping financially. Chris Piazzi wrote a letter to the foundation saying that while they support education to the highest, he learned another valuable lesson in life and that was life was to short and that by the kindness of others, he received his second chance.

END CITIZENS UNITED: ENDING DARK MONEY IN AMERICAN POLITICS

A time comes when people can no longer stomach the injustices in the society. They get so fed up that they set a trap for the snake of injustice and cut off its head. In 2010, when the Supreme Court passed its decision in the End Citizens V. F.E.C case, nobody really predicted its effects. However, in a few years times, the amount of money being used in the American politics started rising drastically to amounts that many people had not thought of. Dark money cartels began influencing the politics towards their interest by bring in lots of unaccountable and untraceable money.

End Citizens United is a Political Action Committee that seeks to see the end of these dark money cartels and thus removing this excess money that is taking the United States politics by storm and a bad storm for that matter. It was established in March 2015 with three main goals. The first is creating awareness about the issue of money in politics thus making it a matter of national priority. Through this awareness, many Americans will stand up against the Citizens United decision and thus foster campaign finance reforms. The second is to use grassroots membership to show the relationship between political power and such money. To achieve this, the group has developed a petition and it is requesting members to sign it so as to pressure congress for such reforms. Only five months after establishment, this committee had managed to have 325,000 signatures.

The third goal of End Citizens United is to foster election of leaders who are supporting the reform of the campaign finance system in the United States. Given the reaction of congress to this issue, End Citizens United has seen that most of the Democrats are the ones in support of such reform. The committee has therefore endorsed and supported democratic leaders for the various Senate and House seats. It also seeks to improve their campaigns through direct mailers, polling and even television advertisements.

Operations of End Citizens United are funded by their grassroots supporters. These people make small donors but at the end of the day, their contribution tends to amount to huge amounts. For example, they were looking to have at least $25 million contributions by the 2016 election to foster their action. The expenditure of the group is also rather transparent and accountable. They ensure to file their statements with the Federal Elections Commission.

The actions of End Citizens United have been criticized by some people among them an expert in campaign finance regulation called Rick Hasen. He argues that rather than using the money to support democratic leaders, they should focus more on creating awareness on the issue. However, this should not be a viable basis since End Citizens United has combined these two goals and what they have is totally working. Squaw Valley Ski Resort Sees Success After Water Issues

Major rain and weather events are not uncommon in parts of the world where Winter sports are popular, which includes Squaw Valley Ski Resort where a recent rain event caused issues with an isolated number of water wells serving the Upper Mountain area of the resort. Squaw Valley officials have moved to reassure the public that every possible option is being explored to rectify a contamination caused by an inundation of rain water entering four recently updated water wells; Squaw Valley’s Liesl Kenney explained in a statement that the small area served by contaminated water has seen all supplies shut off until water experts from Placer County and independent water quality experts have given the affected water supplies the all clear.

 

Public Relations Director Liesl Kenney and Placer County Environmental Health Department spokesperson Wesley Nicks explained the contamination issues are being beaten by the combined skills of those working on the issue. Liesl Kenney also reassured visitors that no guest at the resort was ever offered contaminated water as the testing procedures of the resort had identified the presence of E.Coli and Coliform before it entered the supplies of the resort. To ensure the comfort and safety of guests complimentary bottled water is being offered to those using the slopes in the affected areas of Upper Mountain.

 

Wesley Nicks also provided an update on the success rate of the team working on the water quality problems that has seen E.Coli removed from three of four affected wells and Coliform levels also reduced. As the water supply is returned to safe drinking levels Liesl Kenney confirmed no well water supplies will be returned to active service until they are declared safe by Placer County Environmental Health Department and the independent water experts employed by Squaw Valley Ski Resort to rectify the contamination.

 

One of the reasons for encouragement for Squaw Valley officials has been the fact the water testing procedures already in place at the resort identified the contamination and allowed officials to report no medical links have been found to the contamination and reported medical conditions.

In December of 2016, the Austin Business Journal’s Williamson County Growth Summit held its annual program. The summit brings together people from different professions to talk about how to facilitate growth and development in the city to benefit the citizens and the authorities as well.

This summit, in particular, focused around the topic of transportation. With the rising number of vehicle owners, the strain on the roads in Austin have been increasing causing massive problems for travelers around the city. Because of these problems, people have to face hours of traffic every day on their daily commute.

The Austin Business Journal’s Williamson County Growth Summit was mainly directed towards the problems that are being faced on Austin’s Roads, with numerous panels being held with the aim to find a solution to ease these problems.

The summit saw some incredibly well-known faces in the world of transportation and motors. One of the more notable members of the panel was the Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority in Austin, Mike Heiligenstein. Mike Heiligenstein has actively been part of a vast number of transportation committees and organizations and has tried his best to put his knowledge of transportation to good use and help the city of Austin.
